BBBRRRRRRR We survived no outside recesses,and actually had a pretty calm learning day today! We are getting really excited for 100's day and have all the bags of 100 items except 2! We will have stories and writing activities and math galore!
We did get a good start on H h week and will try to fit Show and Tell in each day. We are back to initial sound and one item please! One student pointed out how Hundreds day is in Hh week! YEAH! I love when they apply our learning to their world!
Lunch menus were in my mailbox when I came in from dismissing the students. I'll send them home tomorrow!
For Feb. 1st It's either:
Chicken & Noodles,
Taco-in-a-bag
or an Italian Hot Pocket
as well as the standard extra choices of:
Chicken Caesar salad
or Ham on Whole Wheat sandwich.
Our manner of the week is "Clean Up After Yourself" and we are working on that especially in the lunchroom and at the end of every center! We had a few centers taken away last week for NOT picking up. The children are slowly earning them back.
That's all for now, I need to go change the seating and calendar since it's a new month!

Thursday
What an interesting day! We have had many, many students sick and today was no different. I am really hoping that no one else comes down with a cold or the flu! The students all seemed a bit off today. There was a lot of crying over small things and a lot of fighting over small things. We had to REALLY work at being quiet in the hall and in class. We did get a lot done today though.
Math- We worked on numbers that come before. For example the number that comes before 8 is 7. The number that comes before 42 is 41. There was a wide range in understanding. One of the things that really helped the students was to look at or make a number line to follow.
Science- We began a project that we will finish tomorrow. I will tell you more about it as it nears completion.
Reading- We had the chance to reread and discuss The Lion and the Mouse. We also worked with our letter sounds and picking out the beginning, middle and end of a story.
We did get a chance to use computers today. The class does very well with them and while they are working I pulled kids aside to begin some of their 3rd quarter testing. Can you believe we are in the 3rd quarter??!

Here We GO!
What a wonderful Wednesday! The students have been doing great with show and tell. They are bringing in lots of different words that have an "o" in the center. They have also been doing well in deciding what sound the "o" makes in the middle of the word and placing that word where it belongs.
Math- In Math we were estimating how many small blocks (same sizes) fit into measuring cups. The students did well estimating and then actually getting the right answer. If you have something that your child could estimate and then actually measure in a measuring cup that is GREAT practice!
Reading- The students were able to come to Reading groups today and spell with me some words that had "o" in the middle. They then came up with their own sentences to read to me. Some groups also worked on rhyming.
Library- Be sure to be bringing back the Library books every Wednesday so that your child can check out another book.
*Check LOST AND FOUND for any missing items.
** There has been some nasty sickness going around the school. Many kids have missed some days. Please remind your child of the importance of washing hands throughout the day.**

Top Notch Tuesday!
We are really having fun with all the sounds of 'o'! Your child wil not be bringing home a paper about their show and tell this week. Instead we are writing what they bring on different shapes, colors and objects on the front board. Like today, a dog and a sock were written on the octapus. While the orange bouncy ball was put on the brown paper for the "ow" sound of /o/. It could have also gone on the orange, but we each have to choose only one place to write our Show and Tell!
In Math we drew pictures showing empty and full, while yesterday I forgot to mention we estimated the area of different shapes and then used wooden squares to see if our estimate was close. The children really enjoy the hands on Math the best!
Mrs. Duke, Kara's Mom was helping each child make an orange octapus with ovals on their 8 arms. Then they children told her waht their octapus might say and she typed them into the computer. Each child will get to cut apart their sentence, then put it back together and write it on a talking bubble to attach to their octapus!
Dismissal was 100% better than last night. We started earlier and kept calm and collected while we got ready to go. We finished early enough that we got to read a few pages of the book, "Over in the Ocean".
I am going to make this shorter than usual because I want to work on both the Valentine's list and the February calendar.
Maybe you will get that this Thursday instead of the weekly news!

Monday, Jan 24th
Today started the 2nd week of the many sounds of "O". It's the last week of this Unit, so there might be quite a few pages in the Reader/Writer notebook that we don't get to in class. Many of them are really good reading practice. Reading a sentence and if it makes sense the student draws a picture and if it doesn't they leave it blank. One page has two sentences to read and they circle the one that goes with the picture. It's great practice for learning to make sense out of what we READ!
In P.E. today Mrs. Edgmond noted that 5 students did not have tennis shoes. The boots are cumbersome and not very safe. In the upper grades when they don't have proper footwear, they have to sit out, so please help your child start a good habit of remembering their tennis shoes on Mondays. Speaking of boots, we were having so much fun at our afternoon recess, that we got a little carried away in the water. Some of the boots were soaked through. I apologize, I should have stuck to the rule that we stay out of the water, but we were the only class out there, and many of the kids were making rivers to the drain by moving the thin ice with their boots.
At the end of the day I did reading groups and assessed a few children, the time got away from us and it was a very hectic dismissal. I am sorry we were so late getting out, and as you probably heard, Mrs. Clapper was a drill sergeant at the end of the day. I am sorry that such a great day ended in such a rush. Tomorrow I will start earlier and hopefully make it out on time and have a happy ending to our day.
Some of the students will be working with a new volunteer to our room. Her name is Mrs. Jockers and she will come in on Monday afternoons for an hour or so right after lunch. I like for you to know who is in our room and why in case your child mentions their name.
I am looking forward to seeing what show and tells come to school with the middle or ending 'o'! This class has had fun discovering many sounds that o makes.

Then and Now - Jan.18th
We had a great day today talking about how many things are different now than they were a long time ago. We had a poster that showed a one room school that was heated with a big round iron stove We could see a horse and buggy outside the window and the children wrote on chalkboards at their benches! We combined this with "O" week and learned that another name for eye glasses is OPTICALS. So please ask your child if they can tell you another word for glasses. Hopefully they will put to circles up to their eyes and say "OPTICALS"!
In the afternoon we talked about Martin Luther King Jr. and had a wonderful story about when he was young. We learned a song to the tune of "Twinkle Twinkle" and I played the flute while they sang it as soon as they could remember the words. I handed out the words and they showed me things they could find like our high frequency word YOU and the rhymes of 'ring-King' ans well as colored all the o's orange. We also practiced making two o'clock o's in our math journal. I drew a diagonal line from the center up towards what would be 2 o'clock on an analog clock. They put dots on it and made concentric circles (like a target) by starting at the dot and pushing up and around counter clockwise. As soon as they master that direction for their O's, a's, g's, d's and q's, they will become much more fluent writers. Our goal in being picky about the letter formation is to help them smoothly and quickly form the letters in a flowing way that helps them get their good ideas down on paper.
Mrs. Hansen and I completed their report cards yesterday and they will be coming home on Thursday. We were limited to 35 or 40 words in our comment section, so if you want to talk to either or both of us after reviewing the report let us know.
Today went really fast even though we didn't go out for the last recess. We were having too much fun learning and playing our math game! We were also missing 5 students, so we hope they get well and join us soon! We really missed Orion, Kaleigh, Elias, Emma and Kendal!
Have a great evening and remember Library is tomorrow! Mr. Besel is coming in for his 2nd session with our class to visit about being a Bully Buster.

Fabulous Friday
What a quick day it was! The students had Music today and seemed to really enjoy it! Here is what we did today:
Math- The students worked with patterning today. They created their own and extended the pattern. They had to tell me what kind for pattern they created. (AB, ABC, etc)
The students also worked on comparing objects and finding the object that was smaller and larger.
Reading- The students drew a picture today of a grassland animal and had to create a caption for their picture. We also discussed and wrote about future tense.
Science- We watched a short video on grassland animals and read about the heat of the sun and its effects on us here on Earth. The students learned that the moon reflects the sun. If you have a chance have them shine a flashlight into a mirror when it is dark and see if it is reflected!
