My Last Day

What a precious day it was today to spend with my class. I have LOVED teaching them this year and am very sad that I will miss the last quarter. I am so excited though for Mrs. Bartsch, she is a wonderful person and a great teacher! Thank you so much for all the love and support you show your child! This has been a great year!!

Blustery Friday!

Here is a quick look at what we did today:

It was SPIRIT DAY! The kids could sport their black and gold. :-)

Math- We finished up chapter 7 with the chapter 7 test.

Science- Living things, we planted our beans today and recorded our observations in our journals.

Reading- We did some of our reader/writer notebook, retold our story for the week and reviewed our question of the week as well.

Music :-) The students always enjoy this time with Mrs. Blakeslee.

Friday!

Here we go! another week has passed by and it is getting closer and closer to spring! :-)

Here is some of what we did today:

Reading- retold the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We also did a lot with what a sentence is and why it is important to write a complete sentence. We did a lot with predicting today and we predicted before reading the book : The Sweetest Fig. We then wrote about what our biggest dream would be. The students even got to share what they wrote about their dreams with the whole class. We once again reviewed rhyming words.

Math- MONEY, MONEY, MONEY! That is what we are working with. We worked on matching the correct coins with their name and amount.

Music! The students ALWAYS have a blast in Music. I enjoying sneaking down the hall and listening to what they are working on.

So sorry that I forgot THursday folders yesterday. Check your child's backpack with Friday folder. :-)

Friday

Today was an odd day as there was a lot going on around Meadowlark. The upper grades had a talent sow today. We as a class were able to go and watch the talent show this morning. It took up most of our morning. Once again, there were no recesses today as it was below zero outside. The students had an extra long center time. We did get to finish out the week of blends by singing our song for the week, reviewing the question of the week and doing a couple more pages in our reader/writer notebooks. We finished out the Science unit about the sky. The students completed their Art projects by writing about what they drew. :-) We have them hanging up in the hall. We finished out the day by watching a fun Magic School Bus all about space. It was a fun way to end the unit. In Math we compared and contrasted telling time digitally and by analog. Phew! What a day! Have a great weekend!

Fun!

Here is what we did today! 

Math- putting things in order. 

Reading- we continued reading groups today. The kids did very well yesterday and today working with me and with our guest teacher for the district Mrs. Anderson. We worked with words, spelling them, rhyming and rearranging them to spell other words. We also reread the book My Lucky Day!

We had a penny poem that we did for Abraham Lincoln's birthday. They each brought home the poem. 

Science- we drew our night sky on our painted paper. We will write about it in 2 weeks. 

We wrapped up the day watching a video on brushing our teeth daily!

Here is a quick peek at what we did today:

Music! Ask your child about making soup :-) 

Math- We finished our chapter 6 test on measurement 

Science- We finished out Science with constellations. The students wrote about 4 things they see in the sky. It could be day or night. 

Reading- We worked on rhyming, quick spelling some of our high frequency words and reviewing our amazing words. 

The time went fast today! Thank you Kara for volunteering to come in and help make the Valentine's Day bags with the students! 

Fabulous Friday

What a quick day it was! The students had Music today and seemed to really enjoy it! Here is what we did today:

Math- The students worked with patterning today. They created their own and extended the pattern. They had to tell me what kind for pattern they created. (AB, ABC, etc)

The students also worked on comparing objects and finding the object that was smaller and larger. 

Reading- The students drew a picture today of a grassland animal and had to create a caption for their picture. We also discussed and wrote about future tense. 

Science- We watched a short video on grassland animals and read about the heat of the sun and its effects on us here on Earth. The students learned that the moon reflects the sun. If you have a chance have them shine a flashlight into a mirror when it is dark and see if it is reflected!

Friday!!

Hello one, hello all! What a great day overall! The students are very amped up for Christmas, but they held it together today to complete some of the academics they still need to do. Here are a few of the things they did:
Math- skip counting by twos! We worked on skip counting to 20. This is an easy thing to do at home as well. We reviewed writing the numbers 13-20 and taking out the tens and ones that are in the number (we used playdough to represent the numbers today, which was fun for the students.)
Reading- The students retold the story of Little Quack. They had to use picture cards and place them in the right sequence. The students also wrote something about their favorite part of the Holiday season. They did very well at trying to write out sentences to describe what they liked.
Music- The students got to watch part of the Nutcracker.
We also had time today to complete show and tell, centers and a read aloud. The day went by pretty quick! Please remember that there are only 3 days left of school in 2010! Have a great weekend!

Blustery Friday!

Snow is on the ground! Please be sure to have your child wear the appropriate clothing as we will be going outside. Today was fast and fun. The students put together a book and should be able to read most of it to you tonight! Yay! We made our turkey's and those will be coming home as well today. The students also worked on patterning today. Very hard. The patterns were: ABAABAAABAAAAB (etc.) These the kids really had to work at figuring out together. We wrapped up 'i' week. The students did very well. Have a great weekend!

What a fast day! Here are a few things that we completed:

Math: one-to-one and using the words "greater than" and "less than"

Writing/Reading- write out and read our poem. "We like the cat. It has a hat."

We had a chance to work with counters and play a game with "greater than" and "less than".

The students had Music today and we were able to work with sounding out words for show and tell that had a "C" and a "K". Overall it was a great day! The class was a bit chatty, but they pulled it together!

Fabulous Friday!

Here is a quick look of our day:

Math- We finished chapter 2 as a class. The kids worked well remembering patterns and completing graphs.

Reading- Today we started our first little reading group. They did very well. We read the book Zoom together. We retold the story of Smash! Crash!? and made pictures of the characters in the book. They also worked on the character page in their reader/writer notebooks and they brought those home today.

The students did their show and tell for 'M' week! What fun to see the things they chose to bring! Next week it will be "T" week.

By Fridays the students are often VERY sleepy. Today though they did very well getting through the day. They even earned 10 compliments!! Way to go class! Have a wonderful weekend! Thank you for all the love and support you show your child everyday!! ~Mrs. Abigail Hansen

Friday! Here Again :-)

What a crazy day! The kids did great despite all the interruptions. Today was PICTURE DAY, if you forgot there will be retakes at a later date. All students did get their pictures so you will have a chance to buy some if you forgot to send money. The students worked on patterning with different objects, while still making the same pattern in Math today. In Reading we reread The Little Red Hen and looked for the sight words "little" and "the". The students colored, cut, and pasted the story in order of how it happened. We also worked on reading the book, "Am I Little?" They should have it in their backpack to read to you at home and to keep. The class was able to work on typing today and finding letters on a computer keyboard. They did well. The students were VERY tired today. There is some sickness going around so it is a great idea to have your child go to bed on time so that they have plenty of sleep on school nights and can have a jump start on fighting off any germs. Friday, already! Wow! Here are some of the things we worked on today:

Math- we reviewed algebraic patterning. The class is beginning to pick up how to make patterns. Not just ABABABAB, but ABCABCABC using shapes, colors and pictures. They even came up with what the pattern would be if we continued it on. Great job class!!

Reading- We did our retelling of a story as a class. They are getting better and better with putting story cards in order of how they happened. We also listened to the story, "The Boy Who Cried Wolf". We talked about fables and what it means when someone asks for the moral of a story. We also read as a class two different renditions of "The Little Red Hen." If you have the story at home, read it to your child and ask them to compare and contrast the stories. 

Science- In Science today we talked about matter and how it feels and looks. We focused on liquids and solids today. The class felt and played with water and talked about and observed its properties. The class then was able to play in the goo that I made. It had both properties of a liquid and a solid. In the end we talked about how the goo was called a suspension because it had both the properties of a liquid and a solid. The class had a lot of fun. If you would like to make the goo at home here is what you need:

1 c. cornstarch 

1/2 c. water

put the cornstarch in a bowl and add the water slowly. Play around with it. You should be able to have it drip from your hands or when you squeeze it have it become solid. 

The class also had a chance to work with computers today, centers and handwriting. They had music and we also went as a class to look and talk about the tipi that is set out on the playground. I sent home their Apple books. Please take the time to read the book with your child. Have them find words that they recognize. I also sent home their reading/writing packet. You may work on the rest of the packet with your child for extra practice.

Hello! I hope that this finds you well and ready for the weekend! Here's a quick look of what we did today:

Math- can you believe that they are actually starting the foundational concepts of Algebra? We worked on patterns. AABAABAAB and so on. If you would like to work on this at home you can use drawings or actual manipulatives for your child to figure out patterns. This is VERY difficult for some, so practice is always a great idea.

Reading- We were able to retell the story, We are So Proud. The students enjoyed coming up to the computer and moving the pieces into the correct order. You can ask them to retell the story to you. They also came home with a sticker on their shirt that says: Ask me about the word: Cooperate. They should be able to tell you that it means "to work together".

We used white boards today to work on handwriting and their reader/writer notebooks went home today as well. If you have time to work the rest of the sections over with your child that is awesome practice for them. This is just some of what we worked on today. FRIDAY!

Friday already! Wow! I hope that your child is feeling more and more comfortable at school. Here is what we worked on today:

First, the students had a chance to look through some of Mrs. Clapper's bear books. Second, we finished out the reading series of the last two weeks. The students worked on character, setting and plot. (These were all introductions and we do not expect your child to know what they are verbatim yet.) You may want to start using some if this vocabulary as you read to your child at home. The class read Jack and Max together and worked on actually reading the words "I and Am" throughout the story. We retold the Little School Bus story using story cards. The class worked on putting the parts in the correct order of occurrence. We finished out the day reading the story of King Midas and following the ordinal numbers. In Math today we finished chapter one by taking a test. The class did very well. Please use prepositions at home whenever you can. This extra practice allows your child to have some meaningful learning experiences at home. Also, practicing which hand is your left and right helps your child when we talk about left and right in class. The students had a chance to play in centers and to learn about nouns. Phew! Great Friday!

What a great Friday! The kids did great and we were able to fit in a LOT of things today. The students started off the day reviewing same and different from the Math the day before. We went on in Math and completed the sorting of objects by one attribute. For Reading we retold the Little Bus story as a class using the amazing words for the next two weeks, First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth. The students did very well in retelling. We then created a class graph of how each student gets to school. We also discussed characters in a book. They then had the chance to draw their favorite character from the story and try to label it. We completed calendar time today and reviewed the letters A,B, C, D, E. We began Science today for the first time. The students had a great time with the Science lesson. We are discovering our five senses and how that relates to the study of Science. I placed bags on their tables and they recorded in their Science journal what they felt and saw in each bag. The students also had the chance to do centers at the end of the day. Overall it was a great day! Thank you for all the love and support you show your child everyday! ~Mrs. Abigail Hansen

First Week of School

The first few days of school have come and gone and both Mrs. Clapper I enjoyed your children immensely. We are thankful for each one of them. The students did a lot of different things today. They worked on coloring and cutting rockets, writing their names and reading (and maybe trying to write out) the word "red". We were able to work and play at centers today and read together as a class. The routines are coming and we had a chance to even practice how to do a fire drill as a class. The class played a game all together to help each student recognize their own name. Each child had a turn. One of the new things that the class experienced today was Music with Mrs. Blakeslee. They did really well and seemed to really enjoy it. Next week Mrs. Clapper and I will begin our new schedule. Mrs. Clapper will be teaching Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning and I will be Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday. All in all, what a great beginning to the school year!
