Well, I chose the word wacky to describe our day because that was a book that one of the students checked out from Library today and we read it as a class since it was Wednesday. :-) It was a lot of fun to read together. Here are a few of the things that we completed today:
Math- We finished up chapter 5 by doing the test. We will begin chapter 6 tomorrow which will introduce measurement. Some fun thongs to do at home is to have your child help measure for you while you are cooking, or to measure something in specific units. You could use a unit of a paper clip, or pencil or even their hand to measure things around the house. :-)
Reading/Spelling- I was able to work with some reading groups today, we focused a lot on our high frequency words and writing in a complete sentence with a capital letter at the beginning and a period at the end. The students have done well with their show and tell, bringing in their card with a word that starts with a c, f, k, or n. Great job kids!

We had fun today, Tuesday Jan.11th!
In spite of the cold weather and NOT getting to go out for any recesses again today, we had a great time in Kindergarten.
Farfallena and Marcel is a wonderful book about friendship and changes. In the end they fly south together and we talked about why, so we fit a little Science and migration into the Reading lesson.
The best part of the day for most of the kids, is a new Math/stay inside game where we put some random numbers around the room and they move to get beside a number while we count to 20 by 2's. Once we are at 20 we draw a number and the children under that number need to sit down. They help me draw numbers every time until we only have one person left. Then we play again. They voted between centers and another game or two and the game won. Turned out Show and Tell went faster than we expected so we got to go to centers also today!
I have had a couple questions about the Show and Tell cards. But I think the children really understand it after today when we did four examples with the Tuesday Show and Tell students. The card with the word written on both sides is all they need. They get to tell about why they chose that word and it is a good listening skill for the other children to listen even though there is nothing to look at. It develops their concentration. After the child tells us about their word we post it on a graph at the front of the room. so far we have one "c" word, one "f" word, and 2 "k" words. So if your child decides to change what they originally thought it's OK, and I have plenty of cards. They may want a certain letter to "WIN"!

Monday January 10th
BRRRR It's cold. We did not get to go out for any of our usual 3 recesses. We enjoyed doing our very active Gingerbread Man song and actions as well as a fun song called "Ready to Read" . The children have made some wonderful snowmen so tomorrow and Wednesday Kelsey, our high schooler will help them make a 'talking bubble' to have their snowman say something fun!
In Math we continued to estimate as well as pretended to go to a Butterfly Garden and did some counting and comparing with a variety of butterflies. That lesson fit in well with our amazing words since three of them are caterpillar, cocoon and butterfly. In the spring we will have a cup of caterpillars and watch the process in our room.
We are reviewing the letters Ff,Nn, Cc, and Kk. In handwriting we practiced the F and for the lower case the students were saying make a candy cane but do not take a bite, instead slice it with a knife! I thought that was a creative way of remembering how to make an "f".

Busy Thursday
What a jam packed day we had! Here are some of the things we did:
Reading- reread the story for the week, discussed the story and discussed how things have changed over time. We worked with letter tiles to spell words and read them as a class. Some of the words were, dad, mad, sad, lad, tip, dip, did.
Math- The students completed a counting sheet today that came home in their Thursday folders. They counted numbers up to 31. We also worked on what the word Estimation means.
Science- We discussed our solar system and sky, this was just an introduction to what we will be studying in the coming weeks.
Computers- The students had a chance to work with starfall again today. We focused on the letters d, c, k and f.
The students had a chance to work with centers today and I then began pulling students to work on reading one on one with me. Today the students I pulled (I didn't get to everyone) read the book, "The Dip" which is a part of our curriculum.
All in all the day went fast and the class was a bit chatty, they still got their work done though! Thank you for all the love and support you show your child everyday!

Windy Wednesday!
What a fast day it was! Maybe it was just the wind. The students had a chance to go to Library today, remember that LIbrary is every Wednesday. Here are a few of the other things we worked on today:
Reading- writing out words that begin with "D" ex. dad, dog, duck, we also did a lot of phonics/spelling work today as well.
Math- The students have been working on counting and writing the numbers up to 31!! WOW! They are working hard!
The day went fast and they only had a chance for centers at the end of the day. I will be starting a new Science unit that will be all about "Looking at the Sky". Have a great day!

Another Terrific Tuesday!
Today was one of those days that makes me so grateful for the opportunity to work with this wonderful age group.
We started the day with our Skills Buddy books and read a story, sounded out "d" words and discovered the 'ing' chunk and what it does to verbs. Since our two sight words are 'see' and 'look' we changed them into seeing and looking!
Then we had a wonderful Big Book called "George Washington Visits." We talked about things that were different over 300 years ago and enjoyed the celebration of the parade the town had for the returning General who was about to become America's first president. Since we had leftover frosting and Remington brought graham crackers, we celebrated by making a delicious snack.
In Math we had more fun with the teenagers and found out that Kelsey is 18! We put our silly teenagers by some 'd' pictures and then told something about what we saw in a full sentence. Most of the children can reply in a full sentence, but we want to help them use more adjectives,adverbs and position words.
On Thursday we get another celebration, as our new student Kanalu turns six on January sixth. His aunt will bring a treat and we will all make him a birthday card! I did find out that he will only be with us for six weeks and then return to Texas when is Mom gets back. It's a small world, the son I am going to see this week went to school with Kanalu's Mom. She married a man from Hawaii and they are both in the Air Force. Already the students have been suggesting ways to make him feel comfortable at our school. We earned three loops in the kindness chain today and I am sure they are ready to Be their Best for Mrs. Mettler tomorrow.
We ended the day with a reward for quietly getting ready. We read the story of Rumplestilskin that we didn't have time for last week during "r" week! I hope your child had as much fun in school today as I did. Even at recess we extended the playground to run through some of the untouched snow south of our school and swing and slide with snowclothes on! Life is good!
Have a great evening, and enjoy their library book for one more night but send it back tomorrow: IT"S LIBRARY DAY!

2011 is HERE!
We had a great school day ringing in the new year. Well, we didn't actually ring anything, but we had fun talking about the new year. We had a January song (tune is Ole Suzannah)
Oh the month of January is the first month of the year.
On New Year's Eve we stay up late, at Midnight we all cheer.
On January 15th every year I sing,
and celebrate the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King.
January, that' how the year begins.
Twelve months will come and go
Before it's New Year's eve again.
We had fun talking about getting do do sleep overs with cousins and other fun celebrations!
In math we reviewed some of the tricky numbers 12 - 19 calling them teenagers. My daughter has made some colorful characters with crazy hair, one with headphones, another with sunglasses, and of course, 16 is driving! We call them tricky because most of the other numbers you read the left number first. Anyway, I wanted you to know what's going on if you hear them start talking about how teenagers can be a little rowdy!
On Wednesday we are getting a new student. His name is Kanalu Wong and he is staying with cousins who go to Meadowlark while his parents serve in the armed forces. Mrs. Mettler, the guest teacher the children know from September will be here to welcome him Wednesday morning as I am flying to MN to meet our newest granddaughter Brianna Marie who was born the day after Christmas. Mrs. Hansen will be in as usual Wednesday afternoon! I am sure this polite group of children will welcome and help Kanalu adjust to a new school.
We did send home the Thursday folders today because of the vacation and the new calendar. If you could get those back ASAP we'd appreciate it as there will be other materials coming home on Thursday. One of the paragraphs talked about report cards coming home in Thursday folders. That will not be until after the end of the 2nd quarter and will come home January 20th.
